Male Genital surgery

Penis Enlargement

Many men worry about the size of their penis, especially when faced with situations like public showers or their first sexual experience with a new partner. Lots of men consider their penis to be smaller than average when, in fact, it is a completely normal size; the average size is between 4.75 – 5.9 inches in length and typical girth is around 4.8 inches when fully erect.

Measuring the penis can be quite tricky as it is very easy to take a false reading. It should be measured along the top of the penis from the base to the tip and NOT on the underside of the penis.

The Surgery

Surgery should be considered in great depth before any making any decisions as, although some length or girth can be achieved, it is not a great deal; patients can expect to gain 2cm or half an inch in length. This can be achieved by operating on the suspensory and fundiform ligaments as this allows a proportion of the penile shaft tucked inside the body to be released.

Length and girth can be increased in the one operation. The surgeon will use an incision called a Z-plasty to help prevent the scar tissue retracting the penis back slightly. The incision is placed in the pubic area so there will be no scarring on the penis itself. After surgery the penis will protrude in a more straight direction and will appear longer. This procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and usually requires a night's stay in hospital.

Penis girth can be increased by taking dermal grafts (tissue transplantation) from the Gluteal fold (the fold of the buttock) and is then transferred to the penis shaft. In the past (and sometimes still today), surgeons have used fat grafting to increase the girth. However, this technique is not as successful as the dermal graft procedure as the body can reabsorb the fat transplanted which may result in an uneven, bumpy or unsightly appearance which is not a consequence of dermal grafting.

Risks

As with all surgical procedures, there are always some risks involved and these can include:

  • Anaesthesia complications
  • Haematoma
  • Infection
  • Loss of sensation / Numbness for a few months
  • After this particular surgery, patients may notice that the angle of their erection is slightly different as a result of the suspensory ligament being cut (this ligament controls the stability of the penis)

However, regulatory pre-operation checks are carried out in order to reduce and prevent these conditions from materialising. Patients are also provided with a course of antibiotics as a precautionary measure after surgery.
