Breast augmentation surgery - the risks involved
Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures, and is generally a safe and relatively straightforward surgery. However, as with all types of surgery, it does carry some degree of risk of complications, although your surgeon will discuss these at length with you before your procedure, to ensure you are fully aware of the risks involved. The potential complications of breast augmentation surgery include:
- An infection of the breast, which result in the implant being removed for a period whilst the infection is treated. This is most often seen within a week of surgery.
- A difference in the level of sensation around the nipple area, and although in the vast majority of instances these sensations subside in time, they can be permanent in some cases.
- The scar tissue or capsule around the implant can begin to tighten around the
implant, causing it to be squeezed. The result of which is a hardening or firming of the
implant, or a 'scoring' of the surrounding tissue. This is known as capsular contracture.
- There may well be a difference in the size or shape of the breasts following surgery. These are normally caused by natural differences prior to breast implant surgery.
Preparing for your breast augmentation surgery
Your surgeon will advise you on how to best prepare for your breast augmentation surgery, and this will likely include advice on what you are able to eat and drink as well as any vitamins or medication to take.

Breast augmentation surgery is likely to be carried out under a general anaesthetic.
Breast Augmentation - about the surgery
There are two main methods for breast implants surgery, i.e. insertion either via an incision in the areola or through an incision in the armpit. In both instances, all efforts are made to ensure the incisions and the resulting scars are as inconspicuous as possible. Through these incisions in the skin, the surgeon will position the implant either underneath the chest muscle or directly behind the breast tissue.
The breast augmentation surgery itself is likely to take approximately one to two hours, and is carried out under general anaesthetic. You will usually be required to stay in hospital overnight following breast augmentation, but it is possible to have the operation carried out as a day case.
As with all cosmetic surgery, your surgeon will discuss your individual needs and requirement with you in detail beforehand, to ensure you are fully aware of the operation and its implications.
Following Breast Augmentation Surgery
Your breasts are likely to feel tender and sore for a period of a few days following the surgery, and the dressings around the areas are likely to be removed approximately seven days following the operation. It is likely that the stitches would be removed approximately seven to ten days following the operation; however the swelling around the breasts may well two to four weeks to subside.
Discussions with your surgeon will inform you when you can fully return to normal activities such as work and exercise, and they will also discuss the various medications that can be used following the surgery
